Barn on Brownwood Road

Here is a photo of a barn I took one year on my way to Todd on Brownwood Road, which is off of Hwy. 421 just past Deep Gap. One thing missing from this barn is a quilt square, although one might have been put up since this photo was taken back in 2009. The reason that is significant is because Quilt Trails of Western NC, a non-profit organization based in Burnsville has been responsible for hanging painted quilt blocks on barns and buildings in the NC mountains. The majority of these are in Yancey and Mitchell Counties, but I’ve seen them on several barns in Watauga and Ashe Counties as well. ~MB

  1. I’ve taken dozens of barn quilt photos, some of which are posted on my blog. The most beautiful one is just down the Todd Railroad Grade Road (which lives up to its name) around the corner on Cranberry Springs Road. It’s called the Star of Bethlehem and you can see it here: http://agoodsnapshot.blogspot.com/2011/06/star-of-bethlehem.html.

I did a loose count of how many barn quilts there are in western North Carolina and came up with close to 700 (there are almost 150 in Alleghany County alone).

  2. Hey Karen, you did find me – all right! Yes, I’m familiar with the one you’re referring to. I really love driving through the Mountains and seeing these, but I’ve noticed they are also making their way down to the Piedmont too! Todd is one of my favorite destinations, and I have been attending the New River Festival there for the last 12 years.
