Bigfoot Academy for Higher Learning

Well not really, but supposedly it was spotted not far from here. This is the building that housed the former Eldorado High School. According to my sources, the school served students in this community till 1946. ~MB

  1. Interesting that Eldorado had a high school (or any school, for that matter). I always thought of it as a wide spot on NC 109. Too bad they couldn’t have converted it into a community center or, like they did in Star with that textile factory, an artists center or something.

  2. Karen,
If 1946 was the last year it was in service, it’s sat vacant for a long time. I agree, it would probably have made a nice community center. Side note: there’s a local person that has a small museum just up the road from there. I hope to get by there one w/e. MB

  3. Can you tell me exactly where this is located? I may be in Eldorado soon for a Harris Gathering at the Community Center. My ancestors lived in the Eldorado area before moving down to the Mt Gilead area.

  4. Hey Kevin,
Thanks for checking out my blog! Love the area in and around Eldorado. To get to the old school from Hwy. 109, turn onto Coggins Mine Rd. You’ll go maybe an 1/8 to 1/4 of a mile and the building will be on the right side of the road.
    Kind Regards,
    Matt
