African Eagle

I only live about 4 miles from the North Carolina Zoo, and I enjoy going in the winter months when it’s not hot or crowded. This allows me to have a little more working space to get some nice animal portrait shots. Today’s theme is birds, and more specifically raptors. They have such a power, grace and ability to maneuver that just totally fascinates me. The zoo used to offer a program called “On The Wing”. I got to attend the last one they had several years ago. In this presentation, zookeepers talked about different types of raptors and allowed the birds to demonstrate certain capabilities. The audience even got to be involved, which was really cool. I don’t know if or when they will offer it again, but I sure hope they will. If they do, I’d highly recommend going.

On a side note, Sue Tavaglione is a wife of one of my colleagues and an excellent bird photographer. Recently her husband showed me an awesome photograph of a bald eagle that she took. You can see this photo and more on her flickr page. ~MB
