Whitewater Falls – North Carolina

Whitewater Falls

Whitewater Falls
This is Whitewater Falls, which at 411′ is touted as the highest waterfall in the eastern United States. It’s located in Transylvania County, NC – known as “The Land of Waterfalls” near the border of North and South Carolina.

Unfortunately at the time of year I was there, it wasn’t flowing at full capacity. It is relatively easy to access by way of a 1/4-mile paved walkway which leads from the parking area to an upper overlook. You can follow the path further down some steps to a lower overlook, where this photo was taken from. The path continues down the mountain further where it joins the Foothills Trail. There is a $2.00 parking fee to access the falls. ~MB

Directions: If you’re traveling East on US-64 from the town of Sapphire, go approximately 3 miles to NC-281/Whitewater Rd. Turn right on NC-281 and go south approximately eight miles to reach the Whitewater Falls entrance.
