Rock Fence Road in Ashe County

I found some nice color over the weekend in Ashe County on Rock Fence Road near Pond Mountain Game Lands. There actually was a trace of snow leftover from Friday night in the higher elevations. Temperatures Saturday were in the upper 30’s/low 40’s, and dropped to below freezing the further up you went.

Spots that had Sugar Maples presented the best color this weekend. They call it “Rock Fence Road”, but this looks like wood to me! ;)

The leaves are a little behind their normal schedule this year. The color in places was nice, but the strong winds from the cold front on Friday stripped the trees of most of the best color. There is still quite a bit of green around the West Jefferson area, so there should be good color there this week. ~MB
